BEA 2012 Recap

I got back on Wednesday night from BEA, where I had the most wonderful time. I got to attend the Amazon cocktail party at the rooftop bar on top of the Ink48 Hotel (possibly the nicest place I've ever stayed). After that, Kathleen and Joanna Volpe took Megan Powell (another Amazon author who is Jo's client) and her husband, and I to a restaurant that turned out to be closed "by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene." Good thing there was another more mentally healthy restaurant nearby.

Me and Kathleen on the rooftop (it was windy!)

On Tuesday, I didn't really attend any panels ... I mostly walked around in a haze of bemusement, taking in the beautiful (seriously, have you seen the cover for Becca Fitzpatrick's FINALE?), the unusual (there were a few ladies dressed up as angels ... and a few shirtless guys with wings as well), the childlike (Olivia Pig!) ...

A view of BEA from an upper floor

Aaaaah! It's Olivia!!

But this was the one that made my little heart beat really fast:

This is the Amazon Children's Publishing Booth! And that's SANCTUM!

So, here is the Amazon Children's Publishing booth, my home at BEA. The ACP team treated me like a star. I've never experienced anything like it. Everybody was so excited about SANCTUM! Not the least of whom is my editor, Courtney Miller, who made sure I had everything I needed, right down to bandaids for my blistered feet. The team surrounding this book is so exceptional, and it left me feeling really confident that SANCTUM is going to be given the best chance of success (oh, hey, did I mention there's going to be an audio book?!?)

Of course, I was also excited to hang out with Kathleen, Joanna, and Walter Jury, my co-author for SCAN. And, through an interesting series of connections, I also found myself spending a substantial portion of Tuesday afternoon with Janet Reid, who is just as brilliant, frank, and hilarious in person as she is online.

On Wednesday morning, I had my very first book signing EVER. For the first five minutes, my hands were shaking so badly I could barely sign my name. My maps were gone after about 15 minutes, and we ran out of the day's allotment of ARCs about 25 minutes after that. It was great fun to sign books for librarians, book bloggers, book buyers, teachers ... so many of them with plans to put SANCTUM in the hands of a teen. It was such a privilege to be able to give out the book like that.

If you're wondering, yes, I DID spend the entire few days grinning like a freaking idiot.

And then I got to eat fries at a diner and hang out with Courtney for a bit longer. We walked down to see the Space Shuttle being loaded onto the Intrepid on the Hudson River. A very mellow afternoon to top off an awesomely hectic 48 hours.

The space shuttle. #random but #cool

Me and my lovely editor, Courtney Miller

I hope I get to go to BEA next year, because I think I'll be more with it and grab a few more ARCs and attend a few more panels. This year, I really just took it all in, still stunned by the fact that I was allowed to be part of it at all.

If I get to go again, maybe I'll bring a suitcase to fill with ARCs!

Anyway--for those of you who are interested, on Monday, I'll be interviewing the extremely talented cartographer who created the map of the dark city in SANCTUM, and I'll be giving away one of his maps and an ARC to one of my commenters.
Here's another tiny sneak peek of the map...which I will tuck into an ARC and send to Monday's winner!

A La Cart!

As a longtime observer of shopping carts in the wild, I was intrigued to discover an influx of foreign carts into our neighborhood. Suspecting that these carts were here not to mix and mingle and learn English, but were bent on bad business, I faithfully recorded their secretive plans and movements and had their comments translated (at considerable personal expense). The startling results reveal rich cultural differences between American and foreign carts. No plots were revealed.

Oh, vous délicieux phallique jaune objet. Je suis violant vous maintenant ! Oui, me violer vous pensez-vous ? Je suis un panier d'achat et suis très amoureux. Va-va-va-voom ! N'est-ce pas?

(Oh, you delicious phallic yellow object. I am raping you now! Yes, do you feel me raping you? I am a shopping cart, and am very amorous. Va-va-va-voom!

(I am vizened and old, and you will not remove me from this pole. Nein! Take hands off my crocheted garments! I have jackboot in interior of mein self, and will use it to kick ze sheeet out of you!)

Gehen Sie weg!

(Go avay!)
Soy un tonto baile. Voy a Remolino y Molinete y mostrar mi tren de aterrizaje a los chicos, y voy a vestir un tutú rosado. Me deja en el Salón de baile!

(I am a fool for the dance. I am to whirl, and twirl, and show my undercarriage to the boys, and I will wear a pink tutu. Show me into the hall where the dancing takes place!)

Yo, man. Pass me een rook. Een rook. Ja. Ik had veel te veel Miller Lites. Fuck. Ik ga te kotsen.

(Yo, man. Pass me a smoke. A smoke. Yeah. I had way too many Miller Lites. Fuck. I'm going to puke.)

The dreaded prologue

This month's Sisterhood of the Traveling Blog question came from Laura, who asked: "The prologue: Love it or hate it? Are there times when it's necessary to have a prologue?"

Laura's answer is here. Lydia is up next week--she's usually second up, but today she has a wonderful interview with debut author Samuel Park, and you should go check it out! Deb will round out the month. As for me:

Well. This is a funny story, actually.

When I queried Sanctum, it was prologueless. I had read the blogs. I would never do anything so risky as to query a manuscript with a prologue. So imagine my surprise when I get my very first ed letter from Kathleen ... I'm going to quote her here, and I hope she will forgive me (I think it merely displays her awesomeness):
If you’ve looked me up online, then you probably know that I hate prologues with the passion of a thousand suns and more. I'd rather crawl over hot coals than include a prologue.

With that being said, I’m prepared to bust out a bag of coals and light those suckers on fire, because I think that’s exactly what this story needs.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Yes, SANCTUM HAS A PROLOGUE.

And in the fall, you can tell me if you think that was a good decision or not.

In general, I try to do without the prologue. So often they are unnecessary. I like to begin a story with Chapter One and move forward from there whenever possible. I mean, why not jump right in? That said, I have another ms with a prologue (I don't know if that one will survive the editing process before the ms goes on sub). As I was beginning to write that ms, I pondered prologues on Twitter, and none other than Andrew Smith responded by saying that, if the prologue was necessary, not to worry about it.

There.

Andrew Smith.
Said.
Sometimes.
Prologues.
Are.
Okay.

Good enough for me.

However, unless you are Andrew Smith, I suggest you consult with your crit partners and ask yourself if there's any other, better way to start your story. If you're querying, be aware that most agents are very wary of them. You can also educate yourself by reading a handful of the bazillion blog posts and articles on prologues, but no more than that, because that kind of activity can tie you up in knots, I tell you. I'm not going to repeat all of that advice here because I'm definitely no expert on this topic. Obviously, lots of published works have prologues, but like so many things in writing, it's difficult, as an unknown, unpublished writer, to know when it's okay, and when it's not. This is just one of the many decisions we have to make, and it's up to the individual writer to decide what's best for his or her story.

How about you? Are you a fan of the prologue? Why or why not?
